Beginning at a young age, Tom played church and local civic venues around his home in Flatwoods, KY. He was a founding member of bands such as Bloomin' Grass, Southern County Line, Rest Stop, Windfall, and the BJT Band (with Courtney Johnson and Curtis Burch of Newgrass Revival fame).
Tom also played with local and regional bands such as Robin Tackett, Ernie Maynard, The Timmy Cline Band, Bluegrass Revival, Borderline, Bearcreek, Redwing, The Bluegrass Strangers, and the Beth Coleman Band. Tom has also filled-in with greats such as Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, Melvin Goins, Peter Rowan, Bill Keith, and Charlie Sizemore.
The most memorable point of Tom's career came when he met a gentleman by the name of Rollin "Oscar" Sullivan in 1984. After becoming good friends, Oscar invited Tom to join his group, which happened to be the world famous Grand Ole Opry comedy team of Lonzo and Oscar. Tom took on the part of Lonzo, which he played for three years.
In recent years, after a brief stint with the James King Band, Tom took a short hiatus from music. But soon he was back in the business, joining forces with Kevin to form a new band. Close friends with Kevin for over twenty years, Tom eagerly accepted Kevin's invitation to join The Kevin Prater Band. Tom's is an excellent, multi talented instrumentalist, focusing on guitar in the band. Tom is a huge part of the bands vocals and harmonies, adding so much to the KPB sound. Tom brings over forty years of experience and is excited to be on the road with the band. The band is made up of not only great musicians, but great friends. They truly enjoy each other and the music, and that shines through on the stage.
